Term 3 Week 8

This week Year 5 have been very busy finalising our Christmas Art Competitions, starting a new unit for Maths, taking part in Science experiments and well I guess the list is endless. We are still reading the book 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio and everyday we are left wanting to know more.

MATHEMATICS

This week in Mathematics we started to learn about fractions and decimals. We also played a chance game with M&Ms. We started the game by receiving one small packet of M&M's and we guessed how many M&M's were going to be in our packet. We then opened our packet and had to find the probability of selecting a blue/orange/yellow/green coloured M&M. For example I had 15 M&Ms and 3 blue ones so the chance of getting a blue M&M 3 over 15. We then had to close our eyes and select an M&M and we had to record our findings in a table and work out the frequency of each.

SCIENCE EXPERIMENT

In Science we have been learning about animals and their adaptations to Antarctica's environment. We learnt about a term 'blubber' this is something some animals have which keeps them warm. First we got two small zip lock bags and a pair of gloves. One hand was placed in a zip lock bag that had no oil and the other hand was placed in a zip lock bag with oil. We then put both hands into a container of ice cold water (it was absolutely FREEZING!). We had to investigate what bag kept our hands warmer. We learnt that the hand with the oil in the bag kept our hands warmer as it acted like an extra layer it was as if we had blubber.

SPORT

In sport we did a few different activities such as soccer, touch football and mini tennis. We were divided into three groups. We had a lot of fun playing all these games.

RELIGION

Over the past few weeks we have been working on our Christmas Art Competition. Some of us decided to use paints, pastels, pencils, charcoal along with other materials. We are extremely proud of our end result. This week we participated in a small meditation prayer service where we were asked to bring in an item that we are thankful God created. It was a lovely and memorable lesson as we discovered our inner peace and inner happiness.

Today we hosted our annual Grandparents Day (G-Day). For our concert we performed 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' with guitarists Ruby and myself (Sarah) and our peers used chimes. For the remainder of the day we were fortunate enough to spend time with our loved ones.

Touch down...

Good afternoon Year 5,

I have touched down in Abu Dhabi. After an extremely long flight with minimal sleep (I was surrounded by a lot of snoring people) it was good to get some fresh air and stretch my legs.

My next stop is Istanbul!!

I was looking through some lovely photos from yesterday and I think this photo sums up the past Term. As you can see lots of smiling faces.....

OR maybe you think this photo sums up our Term.....you take your pick :)

Term 3 Week 7

On Tuesday our school celebrated Book Week. The theme for this year's Book Week was 'Books light up our world'. We had to dress up as our favourite character from a book. Many dressed up from popular fiction novels such as, Harry Potter, Matilda, Pokémon and Alice in Wonderland. In the afternoon we participated in ShazArt. Here are some photos of our day.

For sport on Thursday we had to make up our own dance using music and we were encouraged to use dance elements such as the canon and unison.

For music this term we have been focusing on Somewhere Over the Rainbow which we will be performing at G-Day on Friday 4th September.

Throughout the term we have been working extremely hard on our artworks for the Christmas Art Competition. We were given a selection of scripture passages and chose the passage we would like to create. We were given the option to draw or paint using an assortment of materials. When our artworks were complete we had to write an explanation highlighting the religious imagery we used and the choice of colours that may represent different emotions.

Term 3 Week 6

MATHS
This week we started our new unit on fractions. Here are some photos of us using playdough to make fractions.

SPORT
This week for sport with Miss Stroligo we continued working on our baseball skills. We are becoming experts and bowling and fielding. We are looking forward to putting these into practice in a baseball game over the next few weeks.

SPELLING
Last week for homework we focused on spelling words with the letter ‘a’. We were asked to write our spelling words on a piece of material. As you can see some of us have been thinking outside of the box and writing these on baking paper, wood, rocks and in other forms.

SCIENCE

This week was National Science Week and we were fortunate enough to attend Chevallier College. One of the things that we did while we were there was the chemical cannon. Here are some photos.
