This week Year 5 have been very busy finalising our Christmas Art Competitions, starting a new unit for Maths, taking part in Science experiments and well I guess the list is endless. We are still reading the book 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio and everyday we are left wanting to know more.
MATHEMATICS
This week in Mathematics we started to learn
about fractions and decimals. We also
played a chance game with M&Ms. We started the game by receiving one small packet of M&M's and we guessed how many M&M's were going to be in our packet. We then opened our packet and had to find the probability of selecting a blue/orange/yellow/green coloured M&M. For example I had 15 M&Ms and 3 blue ones so the chance of getting a blue M&M 3 over 15. We then had to close our eyes and select an M&M and we had to record our findings in a table and work out the frequency of each.
SCIENCE
EXPERIMENT
In Science we have been learning about animals and their adaptations to Antarctica's environment. We learnt about a term 'blubber' this is something some animals have which keeps them warm. First we got two small zip lock bags and a pair of gloves. One hand was placed in a zip lock bag that had no oil and the other hand was placed in a zip lock bag with oil. We then put both hands into a container of ice cold water (it was absolutely FREEZING!). We had to investigate what bag kept our hands warmer. We learnt that the hand with the oil in the bag kept our hands warmer as it acted like an extra layer it was as if we had blubber.
SPORT
In
sport we did a few different activities such as soccer, touch football and mini
tennis. We were divided into three groups. We had a lot of fun playing all
these games.
RELIGION
Over
the past few weeks we have been working on our Christmas Art Competition. Some of
us decided to use paints, pastels, pencils, charcoal along with other materials. We are extremely proud of our end result. This week we participated in a small meditation prayer service where we were asked to bring in an item that we are thankful God created. It was a lovely and memorable lesson as we discovered our inner peace and inner happiness.
Today we hosted our annual Grandparents Day (G-Day). For our concert we performed 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' with guitarists Ruby and myself (Sarah) and our peers used chimes. For the remainder of the day we were fortunate enough to spend time with our loved ones.
